Dear Church,
In less than two weeks, Advent will once more be upon us.
Advent—which means “Coming” in Latin—is the season of the liturgical year in which we as the Christian Church reflect on and prepare ourselves for the coming of Christ—the coming of Christ at Christmas, yes, but also, and even more emphatically, the future coming of Christ with his consummated Kingdom.
To that end, we will spend the first Sundays of Advent concentrating on our Christian hope for that which is to come: the state of things in a restored Creation and the experience of a resurrected body impervious to maladies such as death and sin.
Then, we will turn our attention to the promissory note on that hope: the coming of the incarnate God at Christmas whose resurrection in the face of a humiliating death vindicates all he said and promised concerning the Kingdom which is to come.
At this time of year, we have so much for which be thankful and hopeful. Christ has come, indeed—and Christ is coming once more.
This Advent season, let us prepare ourselves to celebrate and affirm both of these wondrous truths.
All my love,
Austin
